Ivan Martin addresses 500 delegates at Symposium 2009
→ Ivan Martin this week delivered his annual keynote speech in front of 500 delegates from across the financial services industy. This year's event took place in Manchester and Ivan gave an overview of the work that Sesame has undertaken in what has been another challenging year for the advice profession.
He went on to outline some of Sesame's priorities for 2010 as it continues to lobby the FSA on its RDR proposals, as well as delivering the services and support that will help advisers in their transition to the new environment being created by the RDR and Mortgage Market Review.

Executive Chairman Ivan Martin spoke positively about the recent acquisition of Bankhall and PMS whilst acknowledging the fragile economic environment:
The financial crisis will only accelerate the retreat of the State from pension and benefits provision, and finally, we have a golden generation approaching retirement who have accumulated significant wealth from property and final salary schemes. Many will need quality advice from IFAs.
Sesame has a big role to play in helping UK consumers address this position and that is why we decided to move forward and acquire Bankhall and PMS.
Ivan also sent a clear message to the FSA and delegates.
Given the experience and skills of IFAs - we believe that any system built solely upon written examinations flies in the face of common sense…and I say again to FSA “Under no circumstances should we contemplate a regime where experienced and competent advisers are lost to the market”
He also warned:
I believe that if the FSA doesn’t take the genuine concerns of the IFA community seriously - and soon - it risks leaving a legacy that will needlessly jeopardise the ability of millions of consumers to benefit from professional financial advice.
And it will create a crisis all of its own...an advice crunch - at the precise moment when Britons need advice more than ever before.
Ivan also acknowledged his pride in working with many quality firms this year:
Without you, and without your success, we have no business and that is why we will share in all the challenges that face us today.
This means we are in a position – today – to make commitments for investment in the businesses you are building for tomorrow.
